This packet has a writing activity that will help K-2 students write to inform or explain while using their imagination!
After reading descriptions online of animals at your local animal shelter, your students can try their hand at writing descriptions themselves! The forms have students fill in information in a table (like they will see online), and then they will write a description of the pet combining informative and persuasive writing.
I have included examples of some of the writing from my kindergarten students. I also included a form that may allow you to extend this activity for 1st and 2nd graders. Students will read the descriptions classmates write, and then draw a conclusion stating who this might be the "perfect" pet for. They will have to site evidence in the descriptions to support their conclusions.
The packet includes several morning journal writing prompts based on pets.
The packet also includes photographs and ideas of additional service learning projects you could do with any grade to help your local animal shelter. Examples include: making heating pads for the spay/neuter clinic, holding a "Pennies for Pets" fundraiser to benefit your local humane society, and making no-sew blankets for animal shelters.
