This animal classification/sorting activity can be tailored to fit your students’ needs at any grade level! The sorting can be a simple activity where animals are sorted based on size (small or large) or into categories such as pet vs wild. However, the sorting can also become increasingly more complex where students are sorting based on vertebrate vs invertebrate, animal class and body covering etc. This activity includes multiple sorting mats and 48 animal cards. The animal cards can be used in their entirety or can be selected based on the applicability to your students, which specific sort is to be performed and the difficulty level you wish to achieve. During particular sorts you may wish to remove some cards (recommended) to even out the sort (for example as there is more wild animals, vertebrates and large animals etc).
The 48 animal cards included are:
monkey, pig, cow, polar bear, giraffe, zebra, racoon, rabbit, mouse, horse, beaver, fox, skunk, deer, goat, dog, cat, lion, squirrel, elephant, rhinoceros, dolphin, flamingo, chicken, turkey, goose, owl, penguin, salamander, toad, frog, octopus, snake, crocodile, shark, fish, turtle, snail, crab, sea horse, ant, spider, ladybug, praying mantis, bee, moth, butterfly, dragonfly
The Classification/Sorting Mats Included are:
Pet vs Wild
Small vs Large
Habitat- Forest, Ocean, Farm, Zoo (recommend removing the 8 bug cards)
How Many Legs-0,2,4,6,8,10 * (you can remove the crab card and only use mats 0-8 if desired)
Land, Air or Water
Vertebrate vs Invertebrate
Animal Classes- mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, other(invertebrates)
Vertebrate Animal Classes- mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians (remove invertebrate cards)
Invertebrate Animal Classes- includes only those specific to this activity- molluscs, arachnids, insects, crustaceans (11 cards)
Body Coverings-hair/fur, skin, feathers, scales, exoskeleton/shell
The sorting mats can be printed full page or printed 2 to a page to reduce the total pages printed.
Worksheets are included for each sort and set up so students can write the animals under the correct headings. Also included are 2,3, and 4 column blank worksheets. This gives you the option to sort the cards accordingly but leave out some of the above sub sections (ex/ body coverings- hair, skin, scales, feathers only) or sort in another way.
Some sorts have many possible answers; they can be marked at your discretion based on the parameters set by you and your students. Ex/ What does a pet mean to you?
Answer Keys Included: Habitat, How Many Legs, Land, Air or Water, Vertebrate vs Invertebrate, Animal Classes, Vertebrate Animal Classes, Invertebrate Animal Classes, Body Covering.
* Again these are a guideline only and can be marked at your discretion
