This is a fun independent learning center that will allow students to recognize animals that can be pets! I like to teach a unit on animals and I have my students complete this activity by sorting pictures of different animals by deciding if they are animals that can be pets or animals that won’t make good pets. Prior to the activity, we talk about different types of animals. As a whole group, we sort the animals, and then I set it out as a science center activity. I have included a color version and a black and white version, which can be easily printed and colored to look like the color version, as well as a recording sheet to hold your students accountable for their work. There are two sorting mats: one for pets and another for animals that can’t be pets. There are also 18 pictures of different animals. 9 pets: bird, cat, dog, fish, hamster, mouse, rabbit, snake, and turtle. 9 non-pets: dolphin, elephant, fox, giraffe, hippo, kangaroo, panda, whale, and zebra. I hope you and your students enjoy this sorting game!
