Students will respond to the novel The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster, while trying to get three boxes in a row on their grid. After reading each chapter, the students will respond to one of the prompts from the squares. Each chapter will bring them closer to their three in a row. Upon reading the next three chapters, the students should aim for getting a different three in a row.
In my class, I don't give kids too much time to respond to each prompt. You might use this as a review before moving on to the next chapter, or as a quick warm-up or wrap-up activity.
