Here is a fun and interesting 2-3 day activity pack to introduce and reinforce the concept of phase changes and matter in its different phases.
Objective: Students will recognize a relationship among molecular motion, temperature change, and phase change.
Included in this download:
- Engaging 13-slide Power point presentation on Properties of - Solids, Liquids, Gases, and Plasma, and Phase Changes
- Vocabulary Terms to define about phase changes
- Phase Changes hands-on lab activity using easy-to-obtain items
- Phase Changes Review and evaluaton student fill-in page
- All teacher instructions and lesson suggestions
- All answer keys
The Power point presentation introduces students to the properties of solids, liquids, gases, and plasma. Students will see how the molecules are arranged in solids, liquids, and gases, plus see how when heat is applied or removed, phase changes occur.
The lab instructs students to take the temperature of ice as heat is applied and it changes to a liquid and then a vapor. Evaluation questions will guide student understanding to the relationship among molecular motion, temperature change, and phase of matter.
Only simple materials are needed: beaker, thermometer, ice, hot plate, and stopwatch or second hand on a clock.
If you complete all of the activities in the classroom, this can be completed in 2-3 class periods. An option is to assign parts of this package as homework.
Lab instructions also include background on solids, liquids, and gases. A data table and graph page are provided for students to fill in. The vocabulary sheet may be completed as an introductory exercise, or as a 'What have you learned?' exercise.
Lesson starters are provided along with teaching suggestions and of course, all answer keys.
