What exactly happens when water goes from a solid, to a liquid, to a gas? How does the temperature change? How does the energy change? These are questions that students will explore in this laboratory activity.
Students will create their own calorimeter using a test tube and a thermometer. Then, students measure how temperature and heat change as their calorimeter is cooled, heated, and boiled.
Although phase change is a pretty simple idea, a lot of students struggle to understand what is happening atomically. This lab helps students to "see" what is happening when phase changes happen.
Key is not included because student answers may vary.
