This document contains the instructions, rubrics, and assignments for how to create a phenology journal.
As scientists, it is important that we really understand the meaning of “Observing Changes in Nature Over Time.” We do this through the creation of our Phenology Journal. Phenology is the study of change in nature over time. We will spend an entire year studying, measuring, observing, and documenting the changes that take place in our own backyards.
The students will pick a spot in their own backyard to study for the entire year, no larger than 5 feet by 5 feet. This area needs to be a natural space void of too much human interaction. Areas with trees and bushes make the most interesting places. Students may choose an area outside of their backyard (example: local park, front yard) however, they will need to observe this area every week.
Expectations for this project include that weekly journal entries will be neat, on clean loose leaf paper (no torn holes), with a proper heading, and completed on time. This is a wonderful project that uses weekly homework assignments that not only shows a change in nature, but in the student’s scientific abilities as well.
