This resource provides teachers with a short biography of Phillis Wheatley and is perfect for introducing a unit on her, or African American or female poets. It works well as a homework assignment, independent work, or to place in your sub file.
The resource includes two reading passages about a poet who came to prominence in America’s late colonial period and was the first published African American poet in history. The biographical texts form a brief sketch of her life from her birth in Africa around 1753 until her death in 1784.
A page of questions (assessing comprehension as well as expressing opinions while citing evidence) is included as well as a short vocabulary assignment on each of the passage pages.
A full answer key is provided.
I used a number of books and trusted websites to research Wheatley’s life.
