Blending phonemes is a key building skills which will help develop strong reading and writing skills. Before children segment phonemes, they must have a strong grasp on blending. These interventions and center cards aim to give students opportunities to work on blending known phonemes. Children will work on blending 2, then 3, then 4 and 5 phonemes with the help of an adult, and then independently.

What skills does this resource focus on?

Identifying phonemes.
Understanding the difference between phonemes, sounds and letters.
Individual phoneme blending with 2, 3, 4, and 5 (extension) phonemes.

Work in small groups to first, and model how to hear and read individual phonemes in words. Use magnetic letters, letter tiles (or any other letter manipulative) to represent the phonemes. Point to each phoneme then sweep finger underneath to represent blending, as you read the word.

IMPORTANT: Students must work alongside a teacher to help them use each card. Once children have had several sessions with an adult, introduce cards and magnetic letters (or other letter maniplulatives) for children to blend phonemes independently.

Introduce blending phonemes (whole class, small group).
* During guided reading sessions.
