Description

Overview:

Included are five phonemic awareness activities: compound word deletion, syllable deletion, initial sound, final sound, and words with blends deletion. Students will delete the targeted word, sound, or syllable from each word. Please note, this activity is included in the phonemic awareness bundle.

What's Included & How to Use:

  • I can cards and focus cards
  • Compound Word Deletion- students will delete the word within a compound word. They will then identify the new word.
  • Syllable Deletion- students will delete the targeted syllable in the word. They will then identify the new real or nonsense word.
  • Initial Sound Deletion- Students will delete the targeted sound in each word and then will identify the new real or nonsense word.
  • Middle Sound Deletion-Students will delete the targeted sound in each word and then will identify the new real or nonsense word.
  • Final Sound Deletion- Students will delete the targeted sound in each word and then will identify the new real or nonsense word.
  • An answer key

*Teach these in whatever sequence you see fit. I would suggest: compound word, syllable, initial sound, final sound, and words with blend deletion.. However; you know your students best so use your best judgment here. :)

Why use these?:

I created these activities because I was really neglecting phonemic awareness in my instruction! I wanted something that I could use as a quick drill with my students or as an intervention. I like to divide these up and do a few each day during my daily review (during this time I go over letters/sounds and sight words.) I put them in my pocket chart and use them with my groups. You can also use these during guided reading or with small groups. Some teacher guidance is likely needed for these activities but if students understand how to use them, you may be able to add them to your centers. Using these daily or a few times weekly, you really see your students phonemic awareness skills grow!
