Description

Overview:

Included are four phonemic awareness activities: beginning sound, middle sound, ending sound, and rhyme discrimination. With these activities, students will identify which word does not belong. I’ve also included an optional practice activity where students will identify the picture that is different. This can be used to reinforce vocabulary. Please note, this activity is included in the phonemic awareness bundle.

Why use these?:

I created these activities because I was really neglecting phonemic awareness in my instruction! I wanted something that I could use as a quick drill with my students or as an intervention. I like to divide these up and do a few each day during my daily review (during this time I go over letters/sounds and sight words.) I put them in my pocket chart and use them with my groups. You can also use these during guided reading or with small groups. Some teacher guidance is likely needed for these activities but if students understand how to use them, you may be able to add them to your centers. Using these daily or a few times weekly, you really see your students phonemic awareness skills grow!

To Use:

•Students will use the X’s to cross out (see preview) the word that does not belong.

•You can also use the ”I can” and focus cards if you are putting these in a pocket chart or you can post them.

•Teach these in whatever sequence you see fit. I would suggest: picture (practice), beginning sound, , rhyming word, ending sound, and middle sound. However; you know your students best so use your best judgment here. :)

•I’ve also included answer keys. You may not need these but I know sometimes it may not be clear what exactly the picture is of. I put the names of the pictures at the bottom of each page and there is a one page answer key included as well.
