Young learners need Phoneme segmentation practice in order to develop essential writing skills. They need to break down words they hear in order to write them. They also need to identify the letters that represent the sounds they hear in words. Students who have strong phonological awareness skills demonstrate better literacy skills.
This set is designed to practice this all important phonological awareness skill. The word card activities focus on breaking up words into sounds (phoneme segmentation). It consists of 84 colorful cards that feature a CVC word, three dots and the word for the picture.
They allow the students to “stretch” each word by placing a finger on each dot as each letter is said, they will then place their fingers on the word and blend it back together. There are also four Phoneme Segmentation Mats for students to further practice their segmentation skills by placing their fingers on the picture, stretching the word and then blending the sounds together to form a word.
I have added 9 words that contain digraphs (which represent one sound) for further practice.
They can be used in your guided reading groups and for independent and partner practice. They also work well as a supplement to your guided reading lesson and/or as an independent literacy center option.
You will receive:
-84 color cards with picture, word and dots -84 color cards without the words
-4 practice mats with words
