Young learners need Phoneme segmentation practice in order to develop essential writing skills. They need to break down words they hear in order to write them. They also need to identify the letters that represent the sounds they hear in words. Students who have strong phonological awareness skills demonstrate better literacy skills.
Your download will include three sets of cards/activities.
There are 64 Sound Boxes (Elkonin Boxes) cards. In this set they will use markers such as buttons or game pieces to identify the sounds in words; as they move a marker into the box, they should say each sound they hear.
The next set is a clip-it activity in which the students will use clothespins to identify how many sounds they hear in words with 2, 3, 4, and 5 phonemes.
Each card has pictures for words with 2, 3, 4 and 5 phonemes. Students can also use dry erase markers to circle the correct number. The set also includes 4 black and white worksheets that you can use for additional practice and assessment
The self-checking hole cards are a fun way for students to practice this skill; after punching holes in the cards, they will insert a pencil or straw into the correct answer hole. They will turn to the back to check their answers.
This card set can be used in your literacy centers, stations or your small groups. Print the cards on card stock then laminate for durability.
