Research shows that students with a strong "phonemic awareness" will become better readers. Phonemic Awareness is the ability to hear individual phonemes (sounds), syllables, and to be able to manipulate phonemes (sounds).
When planning for phonemic awareness in my classroom, I often used simple listening/sound games to play whole group; however I always found myself having a hard time coming up with words to use for the activity.
I created these phonemic awareness to both help myself think of words to use and to give my students a visual as we worked through these cards as a group.
This set includes 50 double-sided phoneme segmentation (PSF) phonemic awareness cards. Show the students the front picture and have them "tap out" the sounds. Show them the back of the card as a way to self- check and to connect the sounds with print.
I hope you enjoy these cards and that they make your whole group phonemic awareness time more streamlined!
