* REVISED AND UPDATED!
The ability to segment words into individual sounds (i.e. phonemes) is important for the development of reading and spelling skills. Included in this set are 60 large (8 ½ x 11) pictures with sound boxes, as well as the same 60 pictures in a quarter sheet size, for a total of 120 stimulus cards.
Directions: Provide the child(ren) with 2-5 bingo chips, pennies, foam squares, or other tokens to be used as counters. Direct the child(ren) to segment each word, moving a token into each box as they say each sound separately. After the student(s) segment a word, have them run their finger from left to right saying the separate sounds again, and then blending them to say the whole word. Both large and small versions of the phoneme segmentation pictures are provided to provide the opportunity for the teacher/therapist to present the activity to both large (whole class) and small groups. As an alternative to the use of counters, the larger sized pictures may be hung on a board, and a pointer used to segment and blend the phonemes.
