Segmenting phonemes is a key building skill which will help develop strong reading and writing skills.

Children will work on blending 2, then 3, then 4 and 5 phonemes with the help of an adult, and then independently.

Work in small groups to first, and model how to hear and read individual phonemes in words. Use magnetic letters, letter tiles (or any other letter manipulative) to represent the phonemes. Point to each phoneme then sweep finger underneath to represent blending, as you read the word.

IMPORTANT: Students must work alongside a teacher to help them use each card. Once children have had several sessions with an adult, introduce cards and magnetic letters (or other letter maniplulatives) for children to blend phonemes independently.

Introduce segmenting phonemes (whole class, small group).
* During guided reading sessions.
* 1:1 reading interventions.
* Centers (only after several sessions with an adult).
