Phoneme substitution is a key skill needed in order to develop phonemic awareness. These initial phoneme substitution cards contain CVC words for the -at word family. Students are given a phoneme to substitute for another phoneme. Then, students create the new word by substituting the new phoneme. After substituting the new phoneme, students then read the word to demonstrate their ability to read cvc words. This activity can be completed through whole group instruction, small group instruction or partner work. There are so many possibilities for implementation.
The -at word family words included are:
bat, cat, fat, hat, mat, pat, rat, sat
There are a total of 32 cards. Each word is included 4 times with different initial phoneme substitutions.
