Phonemic awareness has been missing in many lower elementary classrooms for years, simply because it has been thought to be unnecessary due to phonics instructions. Yet, phonics is the study of graphemes (letters) with a focus on print to get children reading as well as writing letters. Phonemic awareness on the other hand focuses on phonemes (sounds), it is all auditory and helps children with their ability to manipulate sounds. With a strong foundation in phonemic awareness children can easily grasp phonics concepts.

This program can be completed in 10-15 minutes!
Unit 2 focuses on:
-Rhyme production and continues reviewing rhyme recognition (with non-sense words in week 3/4)
-Onset (consents and non-sense words)
-Finding final sound and medial sounds (long and short vowels)
-Segmenting words into 2-3 phonemes (weeks 3/4 focus on digraphs)
-Blending 2-3 phoneme words (weeks 3/4 focus on digraphs)
-Substituting/Adding/Deleting suffixes and digraphs

These lessons gradually build on themselves as you move through them as a class. It is best to start on Unit 1 even if you pick up the program mid-year and then move on from there. This program is perfect for K-2nd grade and with some tweaking can be used in a pre-k or even struggling 3/4 classroom.
