The product is a single page checklist of phonemic awareness skills, beginning with the easiest, and progressing through more and more difficult skills. The Skill List is useful in planing a phonemic awareness lesson since it lists the order of skills mastery. Beginning students should rhyme and segment before they blend. Older students should be able manipulate sounds after they have mastered blending.
As a certified Orton-Gillingham tutor, I have worked with older students who do not have even the simplest, beginning phonemic awareness skills. Even older students must be able to attend to the sounds of language before they can begin to use the sounds and symbols to read and write well.
This continuum can provide a checklist of skills mastery so you can be sure the student is on the right track toward becoming a successful reader and writer.
