Phonemic Awareness Activity - Matching Rhyming Words
To match rhyming words provided with picture clues.
10 activity sheets OR 10 sets of rhyming words
- I would enlarge and laminate these worksheets to make them reusable. Students use water-soluble, fine-tip markers to complete the worksheets.
- Remember to verbally go through the worksheets with students to make sure they know the words associated with each picture before they are sent off to work on their own!
- I like to bring out these worksheets when I am working with small groups of students (ideally no more than 4 students per group) – this may be one of several different phonemic awareness activities we work on during a 20 or 30-minute session. After instructions are given, I send off two students to work on their own. Then, I directly work with the other two students on, for example, counting/clapping syllables in words.
- For students who can be challenged to do so, they are asked to complete the words for each picture by writing the appropriate word endings on the blank lines. You can prompt them to use the corresponding rhyming words as clues to help them with proper spelling.
