This easy-to-use assessment tells you what sounds children know and what sounds they need to learn. Children are asked to identify the 44 sound images, as well as perform the different operations of blending, segmenting, deleting, and substituting. Contains 18 cards and a score pad.
HOW TO USE THESE CARDS
Step 1: Point to each picture, saying the name of each picture as you point.
Step 2: Ask the student to isolate the initial sound for each of the four pictures e.g. “Which picture begins with llll?” The sound should be given, not the name of the letter e.g.llll not el.
Step 3: Ask the final question on the back of the card. This assesses students on one of the 6 operations of phonemic awareness.
Step 4: If the student is unable to work out the answer use the techniques described on the next page to guide them to the correct answer. If the child is still having difficulty model the answer for them (e.g. “k cat - cat starts with k.”) Then move onto the next question.
Step 5: Record the students results on the assessment sheet provided.
On the back of the card is the name of each picture and its focus sound. The colour of the cross on the front of the card indicates where the sound comes in the pictures:
green = beginning orange = middle red = end
Information on the back of the card is for teacher reference.
