Phonemic Awareness Assessment and Decoding Inventory

The easiest phonemic awareness and decoding assessment you’ll ever use with data that provides next teaching steps.

Find out what phonemic awareness, phonics, and decoding skills your students lack and have a complete blueprint to re-teach your students so they become excellent decoders and fluent readers.

This inventory assesses student knowledge of isolated phonemes as well as the ability to decode phonemes within words.

Also a great for reading programs and response to intervention (RTI), as a tracking tool to see what skills students are learning and retaining over the year.

If you want to see a PREVIEW video of me using this tool with a student you can view it here.

The first page is the scoring page where you will note individual student responses and scores for each area. Students are given their own pages where they are first prompted to read and pronounce isolated phonemes (letter combinations or patterns) then you can opt to have them try and say the words with the phonemes in context.

Areas assessed:

  • consonant sounds
  • short and long vowel sounds
  • y as a vowel pretender
  • silent letters
  • vowel pairs
  • diphthongs
  • schwa sounds
  • r and l controlled vowels
  • blends (2 letters)
  • clusters (3 letter blends)
  • rimes aka popular word family endings
  • common word endings/suffixes.
  • irregular sounds made by ie and ei

This assessment is correlated to a match a developmentally appropriate teaching order for phonics taught or mastered in each grade level. It also covers the Common Core Foundational Reading Skills Standards for grade K-5.

P.S. You might also like my Phonics Posters that teach sound combinations assessed here. Great for teaching and filling in gaps that appeared on this assessment.

Also, you can check out the bundle that includes the Sound City Board Game where students can further apply and practice their sounds in word context after they have been taught them.

*Please remember if you want to share this assessment with other teachers you’ll need to buy additional licenses for only half the price.
