Compound words are fun to teach, and kids are fascinated by them. Making new words is so much fun.
I use compound words early in my phonemic awareness therapy. They are a great way to build beginning segmentation skills as well as blending skills.
Use the initial set of cards to build understanding of compound words before working towards generation.
Pages 1-9 – Jigsaw pieces. Cut the pieces out and pair the words to make compound words
Draw a line – Make a compound word by joining the words
Draw a compound – draw the words which join to make the compound word.
Compound game board – play a game and make a compound word.
The same activities are repeated in black and white.
