Phonemic awareness has been missing in many lower elementary classrooms for years, simply because it has been thought to be unnecessary due to phonics instructions. Yet, phonics is the study of graphemes (letters) with a focus on print to get children reading as well as writing letters. Phonemic awareness on the other hand focuses on phonemes (sounds), it is all auditory and helps children with their ability to manipulate sounds. With a strong foundation in phonemic awareness children can easily grasp phonics concepts.

I have been using this phonemic awareness program in my own classroom during whole group as well as small group instruction. This past year I had a group of 5 students come into my 1st grade class reading on an AA level, by January each one was reading on an E or F level. Amazing right?! What was I doing differently in my classroom, the answer is simple, we were taking it back to the basics of phonemic awareness!
So how do you use this program? Well, each day is laid out for you step by step, and the lessons should take around 10-15 minutes! In Unit 1 the focus is on compound words, syllables, onset and rime, rhyming and manipulating phonemes.

Each day covers the following concepts:
These lessons gradually build on themselves as you move through them as a class. It is best to start on Unit 1 even if you pick up the program mid-year and then move on from there. This program is perfect for K-2nd grade and with some tweaking can be used in a pre-k or even struggling 3/4 classroom.
