Product Description
This fun & educational two week unit is perfect for the beginning of the year when your emerging young readers are learning to recognize rhyming patterns in language, a foundational pre-reading phonemic awareness skill. Research shows that learning to recognize and produce rhyming patterns helps students develop decoding skills. This language based unit is aligned to the book, The Hungry Thing. (Having the book is not necessary for this unit--see note below.) These phonemic awareness lessons also work well with ESL and speech students working on phonemic awareness and auditory/oral manipulation skills. These lessons are appropriate for Tier 1, 2 or 3 instruction/intervention.

Although the book is out of print, there are limited used editions available. However, showing your students the read-aloud on YouTube HERE is just as entertaining as reading the book and all the background knowledge they need to complete the fun, silly, yet educational lessons in this unit.

This little unit is chuck full of foundational reading goodness:

*Teaching Points for The Hungry Thing Book (for the teacher)
*Hungry Thing Poster Makings (18x24 when constructed)
