Product Description
In the same way we have students orally rehearse their stories before writing children need to work with phonemes, or sounds, before attaching letters to them. This is phonemic awareness.

Phonemic awareness is essential for beginning readers and must be systematically taught. Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate individual phonemes, or sounds. All this work can be done in the dark – with no letters attached. Phonemic awareness is a very good predictor of reading success and it must be explicitly taught.

This unit teaches skills required for phonemic awareness:

-Letter sounds
-Rhyming
-Beginning, final and medial sound isolation
-Blending and segmenting phonemes
-Manipulating phonemes by adding or deleting sounds

This unit can be used prior to, or in conjunction with, a phonics program. It can also be used as an intervention for struggling readers who have difficulty isolating, blending, segmenting phonemes when reading and/or writing.

This is the NINTH unit of 9. It is for the 9th month of school in kindergarten, first, or second grade or as intervention with older students.

This month teaches:

-Rhyming – Identifying and producing rhymes {focusing on words with blends)
-Identifying initial blend and/or digraph
-Isolating beginning blend/digraph in words - both long and short vowels
-Blending words/syllables with long and short vowels as well as digraphs and blends
-Segmenting words/syllables with long and short vowels as well as digraphs and blends
-Substitution of initial phoneme including part of a blend
-Addition of beginning sound to create a word with a blend
-Deletion of the beginning sound of a word and part of a blend
-Manipulating phonemes/syllables including blends
