Illustrating stories is an excellent way to bolster comprehension. As the story is read, visualizing the content of the story in order to illustrate it adds another dimension to understanding the main idea, character development, setting, supporting details, etc. When teachers take the time to discuss how to illustrate a story in detail, this provides another opportunity to increase comprehension. The illustrations become, in a sense, the answers to the typical comprehension questions asked after reading.
Nate and Rose is also a fun way to explore and teach Character Education concepts.
