Phonics Boxes are activities formatted for the boxes available at Michaels that contain 16 smaller boxes. These activities can also be stored in 6x9 brown envelopes or any other way you would like to store them. Each “box” contains a sound or syllable sort and a flashcard activity/game. The cards can also be used just as flashcards and, if laminated, you can have your students use dry erase markers to highlight phonic concepts (such as vowels, digraphs, blends, etc.) There is a title card for the front of the box or envelope and directions. I use double-sided tape to adhere them.
“Fireflies” is for practicing the dropping spelling rule.
2 sorting header cards, 45 word cards, 9 spoiler cards, and cards with empty jars for each student are included.
For the word sort, lay out the two sorting header cards – “Drop” and “Don’t Drop”. Pull out some of the game cards and work with the students explaining the drop spelling rule as you sort.
For the “Fireflies” game, add the spoiler cards to the word cards. Each student should get a blank jar (print one for each student) to stack their fireflies on. Students take turns drawing a card and deciding if they would drop or not. If correct, they keep the firefly card. If they receive a spoiler card, they lose the number of fireflies indicated and then play passes to the next player. The student with the most fireflies at the end of the game is the winner.
