Beginning readers need practice segmenting words, reading sight words, and developing reading fluency. As they become fluent in their reading, they also need practice identifying, spelling, and writing the various graphemes/spelling patterns for each vowel sound. This fluency passage is perfect for students who are beginning to decode words with various long a spelling patterns. It is also great for fluent readers who need to begin to apply these spelling patterns in their writing.
Step 1 – Introduce the phonics skill.
Step 2 – Blend and read a list of words with the phonics pattern. Pictures are included.
Step 3 – Read the passage. (I use these passages in guided reading groups, so I have my students whisper read. I help them decode as needed.)
Step 4 – Read the passage a second time and underline all of the words with the phonics pattern. Students must write the words they underlined for extra practice. My students like to use paint dabbers to highlight the spelling pattern in each word.
Step 5 – Read the passage a third time and answer the comprehension questions.
Step 6 – Students use letter boxes to find and write the words.
Step 7 - Students retell the beginning, middle, and end of the story with words or illustrations.
