This bundle of easy to prepare phonetic word lists with a hedgehog theme is an engaging way for first and second-grade students to apply their decoding skills and to develop fluency in reading one-syllable words. This is an extensive, step-by-step resource that can be individualized for your guided reading, intervention, and resource groups or for tutoring sessions.

There are 272 half-page lists with 14 one-syllable words each, in color and black/ gray/ white. Please Note: These are the same word lists found in my resources with a Superhero Kids theme. Both common and less common words are used. There are typically two or three word lists for each step. Although these lists are in a step-by-step sequence, there is some flexibility to vary that sequence. Simply print, laminate, and cut each page in half.

These resources were crafted by Judy, a teacher with a master’s degree and more than 35 years of teaching experience.

Step 1: Short Vowel Words Without Consonant Blends/ Digraphs

There are 3 lists for each individual vowel, which are introduced sequentially; a, i, o, u, and e. After a and i, and each subsequent vowel, there are 3 integrated word lists. Students should possess basic knowledge of letters/ sounds and blending. A handy helper strip for short vowel sounds is included to provide support for students, as needed.

Step 2: Short Vowel, Silent e, and Long Vowel Team Patterns

These words include three letter consonant blends, final ff-ll-ss, silent consonant combinations, and two sounds for the consonants s, c, and g. I have included –nk with final consonant digraphs. I have not included -are, -ere, -ire, -ore, or -ure words in these lists. As a prerequisite skill, students should be able to decode short vowel words without consonant blends and digraphs.

    Step 3: R-controlled Vowel Patterns

Long vowel patterns with r, such as are and oar are also covered in this resource. All word lists include words with and without consonant blends/ digraphs. Students should be able to decode one-syllable short vowel and long vowel words with consonant blends and digraphs, as a prerequisite skill.

Step 4: Diphthongs and Other Vowel Team Patterns (al, au, aw, ew, oi, oy, oo, ou, and ow)

I have included -al/ -all in this resource due to the vowel sound. All word lists include words with and without consonant blends/ digraphs. Students should be able to decode one-syllable short vowel, long vowel, and r-controlled vowel words with consonant blends and digraphs, as a prerequisite skill.

Please check out the individual descriptions or previews for a table of contents of the word lists included in each resource in this bundle.
