I use these in my classroom to introduce, practice, and review sounds. My students respond to the cards in the following way when I show the card:
*they say the name of the picture "cat"
*then they say the sound "/k/"
*last they say the name of the letter "C"
I have used phonics cards in my classroom for years. I began using them when I worked with dyslexic students. Research has shown that having a picture, sound, and corresponding letter for students to mentally and visually refer to, helps with retention. In my classroom we practice these on a daily basis to help students to develop automaticity. It is amazing that after the students reach this point, you are able to cue the students by saying the name of the "phonics picture" and they can immediately remember how to spell the associated sound.
They love it! Of course use these in whatever way meets the needs of both you and your students. This product coordinates with my Calendar Companion and Number Cards 0-20 (both with matching chevron themes).
