Phonics Freebie Apple Puzzles
Segmenting 2 Syllable Words
Thanks for looking at this freebie! I am offering this product free, both in color and in blackline. I have several more freebies in my store. I would love for you to give feedback and become a follower! I hope your school year will be one of the very best ever! Blessings!
PREPARATION-Run on copy or bond paper. Laminate copy paper if possible for durability. Paste the cover page on a large manila envelope and store contents inside for organizational purposes. Cut the worms into flashcards, on the rectangle box lines. Keep them all together in a baggie. Cut the apples by 1) following the lines on the top patch leaving the stem attached and 2) follow the lines on the bottom patch. 3) Now just cut off any white spaces left outside the middle puzzle pieces. Do not cut off the small triangle patch! Sort the top pieces together. Sort the middle picture pieces together. And finally sort the bottom puzzle pieces together. (Place into small baggies to save time when using them in a center or in a small teaching group)

DIRECTIONS This literacy center is appropriate for first and beginning second graders. I use it with my RTI students.
Can scaffold : Easy-Provide the picture puzzle pieces first. Next students find the top and bottom puzzle pieces to complete the apples. Finally record the 2 syllable words.
To make it a bit harder, only pass out the top and bottom pieces. Don’t show the picture pieces! Keep them hidden. Students will then have to practice decoding syllables to make real words. Next students complete the apples by adding in the picture piece. Finally they complete the recording page.
Challenging extension -have students write sentences using as many 2 syllable words as possible.
Worms-Place on table with word side out. Hide little apple stickers under a few. Students take turns reading words and looking for an apple underneath.
