This incredible book of word work worksheets is focused on short vowels with blends and digraphs. Each page has students listening and comparing short vowel sounds in pictures, identifying which letter makes that sound, and then spelling the word. It's like picture sorting without the cutting and pasting. (Although I still prefer the hands on picture sorting and the cutting and the gluing, but I use these as reinforcement).
Using pictures to compare and contrast short vowels in the middle of words provides essential listening and feeling practice in identifying the different sounds. Pictures compel students to listen to and feel their own voice which will help lead to fluency in phonemic awareness and phonics.
When using pictures, it is important to introduce them to the students beforehand so that they are successful independently.
This book follows a sequence of short vowel introduction based moderately on the suggested sequence of mixed vowel instruction in Words Their Way (Bear, Invernizzi, Templeton, & Johnston, 2011). However, all vowel combinations are provided so the activities can easily be used in any sequence that corresponds to your instruction. Each combination has 3 different sorts. The pictures in this book have been chosen because they are short vowel words with blends and digraphs.
I hope you find as much success as I do using these in your classroom!
