This activity targets the recognition of different sound pictures (ways of spelling) that represent the sound ‘ow’ in English. It provides valuable practice of skills such as segmenting of words, understanding variation within the written code, as well as being a fun way to reinforce a systematic phonics approach to learning to read and spell.
This download contains two different pictures, with two levels of difficulty. There is a Christmas Edition, as well as a normal mystery grid. The pages that have the word ‘tricky’ in the corner will be more suited to older or more advanced learners, as they contain various words that demonstrate overlap between sound pictures. E.g., overlap in sound pictures can be seen in the sound picture ‘ow’, which in ‘slow’ sounds like ‘o-e’ and in ‘cow’ sounds like ‘ow’. These more tricky worksheets require accurate reading and sounding out of words to determine if they contain the target sound.
Pages that do not have the word ‘tricky’ in the corner do not have any words where there is an overlap in the code, and only words with the specific target sounds in them have the relevant sound pictures.
