The children I tutor usually come to me with reading difficulties. I can map their problems back to a specific year group by identifying missing phonic sounds. Every child I have taught to read, who has difficulties, has missing phonic knowledge. I am now teaching adults to read and am finding the same situation. Missing phonics impacts on reading. I have improved reading ages dramatically, despite the fact that the reader has been assessed as dyslexic.
This workbook contains twelve sounds: ay, ee, igh, ow, oo, oo, ar, or, air, ir, ou and oy. It also contains an assessment sheet and teacher dictation booklet. Once you have tested the student and identified missing sounds, they work through the worksheets by reinforcing the missing sound through reading, writing, searching, dictation and testing. I am already having success with adults using these worksheets. They are based on my high success rate with children, but written for an older audience.
Use the worksheets and dictation passages as often as required to boost phonic knowledge.
