Monitor your students’ understanding and application of the phonics skills you have taught them with these phonics passages. You can use them at the end the week or cycle to assess their progress or use them in a reading group for additional practice.
By using these phonics passages, you will have great insight into the students who are grasping the phonics patterns, as well as the students who are struggling and need additional practice. They are perfect samples to take along to child study meetings or share at parent conferences. You can also do a miscue analysis to find patterns in the student’s miscues.
Each phonics passage has 4 different variations: a basic sheet for the students to read, two sheets with a scoring box at the top for the teacher (one has the word count on the side to help the teacher with the accuracy score), and a sheet with the grade phonics skill words marked in red. This last sheet is also helpful for substitutes or parent volunteers who may also be scoring the passages.
On the scoring sheet, the accuracy score is the total words correct for the passage, and the phonics skills score is the words that follow the phonics skill listed in the box. (You can look at the fourth page to see the words that follow that skill in red.) You also have the option of recording the time it took for the students to read the passage.
NOTE: I do not have my students read the passage in one minute, or stop them after one minute. I like to record the total time for each student and look at the class average. It helps to see what I can work on in guided reading groups, and how I can differentiate for my students.
These passages can be used in place of the multiple choice phonics assessments from basil reading series, such as the Journeys reading series.
I hope you find these passages provide meaningful information to use in your phonics instruction and assessment.
