Common Core- Aligned Activities to do with the Pocket Chart/Center Cards

Sorting Activities with Sorting Mats and Pocket Chart Cards:

  • Sort consonants using picture cards
  • Sort consonants vs. vowels pictures
  • Sort short vowels picture cards
  • Sort long vowels vs. short vowel picture cards
  • Sort initial vowel position words vs. medial vowel position words

Movement Activities for Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence and Brain-based learning:

  • Any of these activities can be made into a movement activity by having students mingle around the class looking for someone who has a card with the same initial consonant sound, the same vowel sound, the same number of syllables, a word on their card that rhymes with their own, etc.

  • Also, you can use your own pocket chart or buy one of my products with blank swatting pages and tape or glue targeted picture cards onto the pages, and post them on the board or the floor. Have children use a fly swatter to find a card that has the same initial consonant sound, the same vowel sound, the same number of syllables, a word on their card that rhymes with their own, etc.

  • Add in specific movements by dividing the class up into what looks like teams, standing in 3-4 lines facing the board, where you have displayed certain pocket cards (taped to the board). Tell the teams that the first one in each line will do a specific movement that you tell them (jump, hop, crawl, do cross-crawls) to the word on the board that....has the same initial consonant sound as a word you called out, the same vowel sound, the same number of syllables that you called out, or a rhyming word. Tell them it's not a race, and they must help anyone else who is having difficulty finding the correct picture at the board.

Phonemic Awareness Activities You Can Do:

  • Rhyme picture cards
  • Find picture cards with similar initial consonants, initial vowels, or medial vowels, long or short vowels
  • Find picture cards with similar final sounds: /t/, /nt/, /l/, /s/, /g/, /ck/,
  • /a/, /n/, /r/, /y/ /o/, /x/
  • Pick a card and clap the syllables. Sort according to number of syllables
