Phonics Practice was originally developed for use with upper-elementary students who display weaknesses with basic phonics skills, but it is appropriate for use with younger students, too.
Step 1: Review which letters are vowels and discuss how vowels are tricky because they change sounds.
Step 2: Review short and long vowel sounds
Step 3: Discuss CVC and CVCE patterns:
In words with one vowel, the vowel is usually short. In words with two vowels, the first vowel is usually long and the second vowel is usually silent. Use the title cards (p.6) with the short, long, and silent vowel symbols to explain and practice these rules.
Step 4: Place CVC/CVCE word pairs on metal rings and have students practice changing the vowel sounds to correctly read each word. Students can work one-on-one with the teacher or practice in pairs.
We have found that most students require several sessions of practice to achieve automaticity, so progress monitoring sheets have been included.
These word cards can also be incorporated into a classroom word wall or used as a concentration game. To play concentration, we ability group students and choose specific pairs of words for each group.
