There are 41 phonics stories. Each story focusses on a particular sound family.
Firstly, the students are to read the story in silence. The whole class then reads the story aloud. Discuss with students the sound family focussed on in the story, then clarify with students any difficult words.
Students are then to reread the story and highlight words within the story that are part of the sound family focussed on. For instance, the sound family focussed on in a story might be z, zz, se, ze. They would then highlight words such as zebra, dizzy, cheese, freeze, etc.
Once students have highlighted the specific words, they are to work on the blank sheet above. They firstly write a title for the story. They then illustrate a scene from the story.
Once this is all completed, they are to cut both templates and staple them together to make a booklet. Their first booklet of their personal phonics library. Students are to read the story for the week, working on fluency and clear articulation of all the sounds that make up each specific word.
At the end of the week, students can take their books home and continue to add to their library when they have completed other phonics stories.
The teacher could have the phonics stories available in the classroom so students can access the books to read and practise their phonics skills during silent reading.
Each story has a comprehension and word study sheet. Encourage students to use full answers when answering questions (ie: begin their answer with part of the question). Also attached is a flash card sheet containing words linked to the sound family focussed on. A way teachers can use the sheet is by cutting each word and having the students group the words into the different ways a particular phoneme is spelt. For instance, if the story focusses on the z sound (z, zz, se, ze), then all words containing the “z” can be grouped, all the words containing the “zz” can be grouped, all the words containing the “se” can be grouped and all the words containing the “se” can be grouped to form another pile. This activity is also found on one of the worksheets.
During the whole process, teachers can be working with individuals that require support.
