Riddle Me Phonics Task Cards were created to reinforce phonics and spelling patterns while also building students’ inferring skills. This bundle includes task cards for all the patterns in the series: digraphs, cvce, long a, long e, long i, long o, long u, r-controlled vowels, and diphthongs.
One of my favorite features of these task cards is that they are easy to differentiate for all your students’ learning needs. All students will utilize the same set of task cards, but several checklists are provided, so you can choose and prepare those best suited for each group of students. One check list features pictures of the riddle answers. Students can check off the pictures as they go to keep track of their progress and aid them in inferring. A second option provides a word list of riddle answers, also with check boxes. This is a great option for students who are still struggling to correctly spell words with the spelling pattern and benefit from practice reading the words. A third option is a checklist featuring both pictures and words. I use this option for my ELL and special education students who really need both supports to be successful. Lastly, you can always use the task cards alone, without checklists, for students that need that extra challenge.
There are many ways to organize task card use in your classroom. Post the cards around your classroom and send students on a fun scavenger hunt to incorporate movement, place them in a container where they can be shared by a group of students, or display them on a projector or read them aloud to use them with your whole class. You pick the activity that best fits into your classroom routine and the needs of your students.
To prep your task cards for any of the above activities, simply print, laminate, and cut out. Provide a copy of the recording sheet for each child and copies of any of the checklist supports you wish to offer. If you would like to laminate the checklists, they can be used again and again with a dry erase marker.
