Phonics-Short A Practice - Blending Words and Sentence Fluency
The slinky sound straw and the fold over flap make this a fun activity for kindergarten and beginning of the year first grade students.
It is concrete blending practice, with instant feedback when the hidden picture is revealed by unfolding the flap.
It aligns with Print Concepts RF.K.1. Follow words from left to right, top to bottom, and page by page. Recognizes that spoken words are represented in written language by specific sequences of letters.
It aligns with Phonological Awareness RF.K.2 Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds in three-phoneme CVC words.
It also aligns with Phonics and Word Recognition RF.K.3 Know and apply grade level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
It aligns with Fluency RF.K.4. Read emergent reader texts with purpose and understanding.
A very big plus is that students have a beginning, middle, and ending place for the left to right slide of their reading finger as they blend the letter sounds. No more covered up letters with little fingers.
Another huge plus is the slinky straw helps in teaching the stretching out of sounds . The understanding of the continuous air flow( like in a straw) of the segmented letter sounds helps in the producing- hearing and decoding of the blended word .
And best yet, is when the folded flap is opened and students know instantly if they are right or wrong in word identification.
CVC words, 12 words with digraphs, and 23 words with beginning/ending blends are included. This is a total of 64 different words to practice blending.
The 64 simple sentences are decodable and use sight vocabulary from the Dolch Pre-primer and Primer word lists for controlled sentence fluency practice. Students get a lot of practice reading the same words over and over, building confidence and leading to fluency.
This activity can be used in a small group or one on one setting, and would be perfect for a classroom literacy center as word work.
It could easily be used with a classroom because it is great review practice and the pages could even be sent as homework practice.
Print on card stock and laminate if using in a small group. Cut just the length of the sentence box, only 3 times, where the small arrows indicate on each page and fold. Use the smallest velcro coins for the fold over flaps to stick.
Run on regular copy paper if using for a whole class. Give students double stick tape or nothing for the fold over flaps. It lends easily to differentiation as pages can be used as single copies or put into small booklets using various numbers of pages.
