These sound cards are a progression designed for students in kindergarten, first, and second grade. In kindergarten, the cards will be used to build phonemic awareness (hearing sounds and identifying pictures that uses those sounds). Kindergarten teachers will use all the consonant cards, short and long vowel cards and digraphs (ch, sh, th). Kindergarten students would say the sound and the picture that produces the sound, for example: /b/ baby. Depending upon the phonics instruction your district requires, you may or may not attach the letter name to the sound. First grade teachers will use digraphs (ch, sh, th, wh), short and long vowels and some vowel teams and diphthongs. Second grade teachers will continue using what first grade teachers have used but will add the rest of the digraphs, vowel teams and diphthongs as the year progresses. The purchase of the phonics cards will come with pictures on how to display these cards for each of the grade levels. This is a wonderful resource to build phonemic awareness; as well as, reading and writing fluency in your classroom!!!
