Teaching young students how to break down (segment) words and then put them back together again (blend) can be tricky, because it is such an abstract concept.
The Sound Surgeon is a character who can help! Almost all children are familiar with surgeons (or doctors) who operate on people, cut them open and stitch them back together again. Using this concept, and some easily identifiable images, you can help ease your students into blending and segmenting with phonics.
The worksheets help students practise
- phonemes (segmenting words into their sounds)
- onset and rime (change the onset but keep the rime, familiarising students with rhyming words)
- digraphs (trigraphs and quadgraphs are also included for students more familiar with phonics)
They are also a great follow up activity for phonics lessons, or a good warm up that can generate an interesting conversation about the above topics.
