Phoneme substitution is one of the cornerstone skills of phonological awareness. This activity helps to develop phonological awareness and spelling skills for Kindergarten and Grade 1 students by allowing students to practice changing words through sound/letter substitutions. Students will have to follow directions to substitute individual letters, consonant blends, and digraphs in order to create a new word in the end.
Simply print, cut each page into its four boxes, punch a hole in the top corner of each box, and connect the four boxes from each page with a metal ring to create a short "flip book" activity. I suggest laminating for extra durability! Students can record their words in a notebook, on a whiteboard, or perform the steps orally.
For built in differentiation, this activity set includes 10 3-letter short vowel CVC word games and 10 word games that focus on short vowel sounds, digraphs, and blends.
