These word searches were designed to provide students a fun way to practice reading, spelling, and writing words that follow many essential spelling patterns taught in elementary classrooms.
To provide scaffolding for students, a word bank is included at the top of every page. Students can practice reading these words first before writing them next to the matching picture at the bottom. You could also challenge students to fold or cover up the word bank so they can attempt to spell the words themselves. (If doing this, students should check their spellings and make corrections if needed before attempting to locate the words in the word search!)
All words are hidden horizontally and vertically (none are hid diagonally) and in addition, no words overlap each other. I know from experience that word searches can be challenging for students at times (especially if they have never done one before!) so this was done intentionally to help students be more successful.
An optional writing page is included. In my classroom, I always felt the weakest in the area of writing. I now make a strong effort to always include some kind of writing activity in products I create just to help teachers fit in a writing component more easily if desired. I recommend printing your chosen word search and the writing page and copying them front and back. The writing page works with any of the word searches and requires students to choose any six words from their word search and practice writing sentences with them.
The word searches are linked (along with their answer key) on the table of contents pages to allow you to quickly find a word search to fit your lesson. I hope your students enjoy them!
44 Word searches, a writing page, and answer keys are included! See preview for closer look at an example!
