Once a student learns their VC, CVC word patterns, and practice their reading, they become successful in the “emergent reader phase”. The next step is to help them move past this “emergent reader phase” by helping them with the next pattern (V-CE) or "Magic E". "Magic E" is a reading strategy for emergent readers that may be introduced in a whole group or small group lesson.
Unit 3: Flipping or Changing the Vowel: Short to Long (Magic E sound) helps with this reading strategy as it allows the students to practice and learn how to check the medial vowel sound and changing it to a long vowel sound while reading the text. As the child practices the skill, they learn to “flip the vowel sound."
In these downloadables, the posters are a visual aid to help the students understand the rule of going from short to long (“Magic E”) words. This set includes a 2 Flip the Vowel posters, full-color cards that are run back to front to show the concept of flipping the vowel, & a VC, VC-E card with verbiage.
