Do you want a quick and easy way to teach your students to fluently read and build phonic skills? Most students need a firm foundation with guided practice in learning phonics. Explicitly teaching the phonic patterns is a crucial piece of the reading puzzle. This simple series gives students the weekly practice they need for success!
This sheet has Short "A" and Long "A" words.
I call this Simponics, Simple Phonics. For twenty years, these tools have helped my students become fluent, confident readers. For pacing, I use one of these sheets per week.
1) Students highlight the phonics patterns while reading the page to themselves.
2) Lead the students in reading the words chorally or echo-read with weaker students.
3) Have students read the words with a partner. A Kagan Mix Pair Share with a Rally Robin is appropriate! The goal is lots of practice with the words!
4) Have students highlight the homework piece at the bottom.
This can be used whole group or small group. Set up a weekly routine with your students and parents that meets your class's needs. Make this a teachable activity page, not a worksheet!
The above activities meet the standards for Common Core in phonics and fluency. The sheet can easily be used for differentiated instruction and brief homework. I use the sheet the day following the initial instruction on our new phonics skill. Ten minutes is all you need! Pick the Simponics page to match your curriculum and students' needs.
