This packet gives students the opportunity to find particular words within the stories they read. They search for "interesting" adjectives, "strong" verbs, alternatives to "said", compound words and words with prefixes and suffixes. They also look for sentences containing similes. By charting the various words the students learn to break off the suffixes and prefixes to solidify spelling rules and pay attention to the affixes when reading. They learn break up compound words into their components. The students also improve their reading and writing by noticing the authors use of parts of speech and similes.
