30 phonics rules, 41 sight words, and 16 easy readers are included in this book. This program uses a sequential, multi-sensory approach. Each reader has accompanying worksheets, flashcards, and writing activities. Topics include rock climbing, volcanoes, baseball, and holidays.
Experts recommend a sequential, multi-sensory approach for children with dyslexia. This program is also great for older students with special needs. My teenage son who has Down Syndrome loves the readers in this series! He enjoys reading them in digital format. Once downloaded, he can easily skip through the activities to access the digital books. This series is also great for beginning readers, as it builds a solid foundation of skills and knowledge.
This book includes all the sight words from the First Grade list. These words are listed below:
after, again, an, any, as, ask, by, could, every, fly, from, give, giving, had, has, her, him, his, how, just, know, let, live, may, of, old, once, open, over, put, round, some, stop, take, thank, them, then, think, walk, were, when
It also teaches 30 phonics rules:
bl, gl, thr, br, gr, tr, sl, dr, sm, sn, pr, cl, fr, fl, st, pl, sk, sw, sc, spr, scr, str, -ck, -tch, -ing, -ed ("ed"), -ss, -es, -ies, -ed ("t")
It also reviews many of the phonics rules found in Phonics and Sight Words: Primer
Flashcards are located after each reader. These flashcards are of the new first grade sight words presented in the reader and select sentences from the reader.
Each reader also includes two activity sheets. These activity sheets reinforce the phonics blends and other phonics rules covered in the reader. Model saying the blends or other phonetic sounds for yours students. Then model sounding out the words by touching the dots. Also model using the arrows as you put all the sounds together to make them into words.
After the activity sheets, you will find 4 pages of phonics flashcards. You may use these flashcards to play memory or go fish. I have provided 2 separate formats for you to choose from.
Sentence Builder Books
Sentence Builder Books develop fine motor skills, along with reading, writing, and spelling. Each reader comes with pages to create a Sentence Builder Book. The first page may be used as the cover. It has the title and lines for the student’s name and date. The next page or two contain all the sentences from the reader. After the sentences, you will find all of the pictures from the reader.
Students cut out the words and pictures. Next, they paste the words onto paper to re-create the sentences. If your students use the included handwriting template, they may also copy the sentences. Students may paste the pictures and/or draw pictures to go with the sentences.
Once complete, students staple the pages together to create the Sentence Builder Book. This is a great project for children to take home and read to their families.
Flashcards and Games
At the end of this book, you will find a set of flashcards containing all of the First Grade sight words. You may use these flashcards to play memory or go fish.
