It aligns to the second set of standards in the Reading: Foundational Skills domain, which includes RF1.3, RF.1.3a, RF.1.3.b, RF.1.3.c, RF.1.3.d, RF.1.3.e, RF.1.3.f and RF.1.3.g. The second set of standards is phonics and word recognition which for first graders, is the understanding of the sounds the sounds vowels make and how vowels can change words, syllables and how to break apart syllables, digraphs, irregularly spelled words, and common inflectional endings.

Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
Know the spelling-sound correspondences for common consonant digraphs.
Decode regularly spelled one-syllable words.
Know final -e and common vowel team conventions for representing long vowel sounds.
Use knowledge that every syllable must have a vowel sound to determine the number of syllables in a printed word.
